COURSE DESCRIPTION

Course Details

You’re in for a treat!

MAPS BELOW

All Aquathon’s start at beautiful historic Wollongong harbour that is central to the city, between North Wollongong and Wollongong City Beaches. Ample parking, cafes, amenities are onsite/nearby.

Water Conditions – Wollongong harbour.

Course maps indicate the route. (*may change on day due to conditions)

Wollongong harbour is a small, recreational and fishing harbour with typically lots of stand up paddlers, rowers, swimmers and mooring for local yachts/boats and fish fleet. All Aquathon swim events start on sand foreshore and stay within the more protected harbour walls. Refer to event maps.

Wollongong harbour has and continues to host numerous local to national and international level swim events as Triathlons, open water swims and aquathons. Normally clear safe water and protected from large seas. In extreme weather it can be heavy rain, storm, wind and swell but very rare, with final decision on course safety by the swim director.

Water Tempreture – December average 19-21 degrees.

Wetsuits: Permitted/optional.

Flippers/Bounancy aids- Not permitted unless with written consent by the organiser and forfeit age/award classification

Support: Lifesavers on standby, large coloured swim bouys and swim stays within the harbour. First aid on standby

The transition, known as the “change area” is on the south side of harbour on the concrete pathway 10m from shoreline. Place your shoes/clothes and any other attire you need for your run. You can leave your goggles/wetsuit here (but ensure you return to collect or have a friend collect for you). Refer to site map/s.

Team Runner/Tag Area: your tag area (tag meaning swap time chip from the swimmer to the runner ankle) is located in the transition area. Swimmer finishes the swim, runs to you where the swap of the time chip takes place. TIP: Swimmer stand still and let the runner remove the velcro and place on their ankle and off you go! No swap, no time, no result/award.

 Run Course/s

The run is super spectacular and all courses initially head north along the 4m wide and scenic ‘Blue Mile’ passing the historic continental swim baths to North Beach. At this point the course continues north with

North Beach – Kids Turn (At rear of surf club). 1km mark with water station and signage

Short Aqua- Continue past surf club for ~500m on the grass (keep to waters side) and turn at the Lagoon restarant grass foreshore (Marshal and sign)

Long Aqua: Continue north to re-join the cycle way, than be directed into Puckey’s nature reserve (boarded and gravel, flat, safe) to mid point at Fairy Meadow. Water station is the turn (Marshal in place), and back the same way.

  • Course marshals and signage will ensure you are the right course.
  • Mobile and standby first aid
  • Be mindful public course and public are able to be on course.
  • Keep left as directed
  • Follow marshal and sign directions

 Water Stations

Water is offered at the 1k mark (kids turn) and on way back for Short / Long and the Long turn at fairy meadow and at the finish line.
